Tucked away in a lonely corner of developer Bart Blatstein's Liberties Walk is the wonderfully elegant Brown Betty -- too genteel to be just a bakery, perhaps, it calls itself a ''dessert boutique.'' It seems an accurate name for this exceedingly elegant space -- surprisingly elegant for Northern Liberties. With its richly painted walls and elegant parlor furniture, it looks like your favorite grandmother's special room for company. The grandma connection doesn't end there, though. The recipes are all hand-me-downs from the grandmother (and mother) of mother and daughter ownership team Linda Hinton Brown and Norrinda Brown. Apparently, Grandma Betty was one heck of a baker -- in particular, her dense coconut cake -- appropriately named Company's Comin' is not to be missed. None of Brown Betty's homespun desserts disappoint -- the sweetly decorated cupcakes, sweet potato pudding or the signature Betty's Buttermilk Pound Cake are all company-worthy as well.

All of the cakes are available in cupcake sizes, so you can try everything. The prices are very reasonable. The space is small but very very pretty. I will definately go back.

I visited Brown Betty's in April 2006 and bought a slice of coconut cake. It was the best cake I have ever had. Since then I have tried 2 different kinds of poundcake with buttercream icing which were both excellent. The cakes are very dense and moist and not for those who are weight conciense.

great looks not so tasty
By kayurpopat on 04/08/2006
I went out looking for something different and one look at this place and I had to go in. The display case is small but the treats looked great. I could not decide between a few items so I bought them all. I called home and told everyone they are in for some treats. The pastries and cakes looked so good we had to cut equal peices of each for all...Once I tasted the pineapple poundcake cupcake I was disappointed but next I had this gorgous looking chocolate cupcake next so I thought I could still save the day. Not so lucky. We ended throwing the rest away which was a shame since it looked so good.
