Whenever Stephen Starr opens a new restaurant, he pulls out all the stops. El Vez -- with a name inspired by the Mexican Elvis impersonator -- is no exception. Housed in the former Trust restaurant space in the heart of Tony Goldman's 'Blocks Below Broad,' Starr has completely redone the interior, from the bejeweled motorcycle rotating above the circular bar to the lavish banquettes to the brightly-striped color scheme, which all add up to a sophisticated yet fun vibe. The food is mostly gussied up Mexican that somehow stays true to its roots, like red snapper enchiladas, roasted corn soup and a Yucatan pork tamale. There are also several larger (and more expensive) entrees, like slow-roasted spiced lamb wrapped in banana leaves and skewered grilled shrimp. But many people will likely come here to drink margaritas, snack on a plate of 'macho nachos' or other tapas (like tortilla chips with a variety of salsas) and have sip of agua de horchata, a lightly-spiced almond milk.

Unacceptable Treatment
By jercalvin on 02/02/2008
In December a group of 10 of us had a business dinner. After we had completed our dinner and dessert and paid our $500 bill, as we sat we were approached by the waiter in the middle of our table conversation, and informed that we had to leave because they had another party scheduled for that table. I was so mad and embarrassed , and I garentee you that we will never book reservations there again, and I will make sure no from our company ever books anything there again.

This is top rated?

Are you kidding me? The mole tastes like bark. Probably the worst I've ever had. On the bright side the bar is a cool place for a drink or two.

Over rated and over priced, does not come very close to Mex. food I have had in the midwest like Santa Fe and Albuquerque New Mexico. No way and never go there again.
