One of the most surprising dishes on the Philly cuisine scene is the grilled octopus at Johnny Brenda's. Not that octopus in itself is surprising; it's finding it at Johnny Brenda's -- a nondescript hole-in-the-wall -- that is astonishing. Inside and out, it's a corner bar in the up-and-coming Fishtown section of the city. Pool table, jukebox, dark corners and a handful of tables are scattered about. There's no bottled beer, just about half a dozen varieties on tap, which makes sense since JB's is owned by the same folks who run The Standard Tap. The menu is tiny but cool. Confined to a small blackboard over the bar, it consists of soup, hummus, falafel, a Caesar salad, fried shrimp, lamb chops, steak sandwich on a savory focaccia bread, shoestring fries, lamb or monkfish kebabs, and octopus, which is downright succulent. JB's is brooding, dark and just this side of hip. No need to worry about getting a seat -- for now. But there's no telling what'll happen when the Northern Liberties scene moves downtown.

Brendas Rocks

If you don't like the food, service or beverages at Brenda's, then you don't like or appreciate quality. JB's is a welcome addition to Fishtown and does an all around great job. The above, harsh reviews are unwarranted. JB's is a great local bar, dog-friendly restaurant by day and a great bar with local microbrews. Oh yeah, and the food is always fresh, flavorful, perfectly prepared, albeit simple, great eats. And, as far as rude staff... No way. I have always been made to feel welcome. These guys do a great job at Standard Tap and are greatly appreciated by myself and many of my neighbors (I live less than 50 steps from their front door).

are you kidding me?

Margaret Battistelli must have been on an acid trip, or likes horrible service, dirty places, and twentysomething posers nursing microbrews forever while pretending to be naughty. I can't tell you about the food. After waiting over an hour and fifteen minutes for a sandwich, we gave up and went to the diner across the street. Worse run place I've ever been in. Nothing is worth that aggravation. Not even worth one star. I had to click it to be allowed to send this review. And no, the menu in chalk over the bar is not cute if you have to take turns protecting your table while the other person you are with reads it. Brilliant in it's stupidity.

Truly disgusting

This is an overpriced hole where the staff is incredibly rude. The last time I was there the server demanded my credit card before she even took my order -- this even though I am a local who has sat at the bar numerous times. This neighborhood has many better spots....pass it by.
