The first thing you'll notice in this upscale Mexican eatery is the "Day of the Dead"-style mural, ironically calling attention to the refinement of the cuisine, which evolved from a materially poor but aesthetically rich culture. Then you'll notice the well-stocked bar. The lunch menu includes such dishes as Ceviche de Pescado y Camaron -- fish and shrimp, with fresh lime, tomato and chile serrano. The dinner menu features seafood, chicken and meat entrees, including the Filete Grito -- filet mignon in chile and tamarind sauce on a cactus leaf, with rice, guacamole and refried beans as garnish. "Grito" is Spanish for "shout," and the dish is so named because it supposedly inspires a cry of joy when first tasted. No arguments here.

The Real #1
By YRBYRD on 07/25/2008
This is without a doubt the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants. The food is fabulous. The atmosphere is sexy and hip. The service is always great. And the tequila is as smooth as the finest of wines. Eating at any other Mexican restaurant after eating here will only lead to disappointment. My expectations are way too high now. If you can't have dinner in Mexico, then this is where you need to be.

We LOVE this restaurant!
By bttrfly3581 on 08/10/2007
This is our favorite restaurant in the city! The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and accomodating. They explain items on the menu exceptionally well, and they even carry the drinks on three fingers! I love that trick. Beyond the staff, the food has ALWAYS been amazing - every time we are there. We have never gotten a dish we didn't enjoy, and I'm a very picky eater. The sauces are delicious, and the meat is always prepared just right. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the vibrant colors and decor are done tastefully. Don't forget to try one of their margaritas!

Best Mexican
By iancole74 on 05/05/2007
This is our favorite restaurant we go at least once a month. We have tried El Vez and were not impressed. If you want a high quality unique Mexican experience Tequilas is the only choice in Philadelphia. I have had several of the menu items, and have never been disappointed. Zagat says that El Vez is $1 cheaper, but if you like salsa you will spend more. I spent $12 at El Vez on salsa alone just so that I could have enough for my meal. At Tequilas the salsa is free, and it is the best salsa I have ever had.

If you live in the suburbs, it is definitely worth the ride into the city. If you have company visiting from out of town, make a point to take them to Tequila’s.
