Phoebe's Bar BQ   

One of the city's most popular and lauded barbecue joints, there's nothing fancy about Phoebe's: one counter, three workers and a pit in the back. It would be hard to improve on their smoky pulled pork and brisket, smothered in their homemade sauces; you'd be hard-pressed to get more meat for your dollar than at Phoebe's. And that doesn't even factor in the almost overwhelming sides, like potato salad so thick and generous it seems contrary to good business and some of the creamiest mac and cheese this side of your family cookout. Their menu offers everything you'd expect to come out of a mysterious barbecue backroom, including ribs and chicken, as well as combination platters that give you the chance to get the full range of the Phoebe's experience. This is powerful stuff -- probably not the best idea for a lunch break or pre-theater snack. But if there's a good game on, or you just feel like sitting around getting stuffed on some bona fide Southern goodness, Phoebe's is the place. -- Nathaniel Friedman
