Fear not, Philadelphia: The venerable Striped Bass has finally reopened. New owner Stephen Starr brought in two beloved New York City chefs to to rework the menu -- much to the chagrin of NYC's culinary crowd. The menu at Striped Bass is still seafood-heavy, but it makes a few more concessions to the landlubbers in town. Chef Alfred Portale has brought with him a number of his signature dishes, such as yellowfin tuna tartare with Japanese cucumber, miso and ginger dressing; hamachi sashimi with papaya and orange-wasabi dressing; and grilled Gotham steak with potato and flan. Of course, there's wild striped bass to be had, along with lobster, wild king salmon with artichokes, and miso-marinated black cod. For a less fishy meal, try the duck breast with caramelized mango. Obviously, the menu has taken on a slightly Asian feel. And although Starr has spruced up the place, with better lighting and new carpets and furniture, the ambience is as elegant as ever. They must be doing something right: For the 2004 James Beard culinary awards, Christopher Lee of Striped Bass got a nod for Rising Star Chef of the Year.Want More Stephen Starr?

I found the eating experience at the Striped Bass delightful. The serving staff were on top of all our needs and the food was delicious and enjoyed by all. We frequent this restaurant often and have never had a problem.

I have been going to the Striped Bass for as many years as I can remember. Was one of my favorites. Expensive but you got what you paid for. What a change under new owners. Great food is now good. Aim to please is now , we would rather not be bothered bending our rules. Prompt service is now a 3+ hour ordeal. Expensive is now lets see just how far we can push things ($17 Martini) Too many other great restaurants around for $200 a couple

What an experience. Having dined in some of the most pretigous restaurants in the US and Europe, I feel the Striped Bass rates a 5 star review. Christopher Lee and his staff have gone above and beyond to create a taste experience that only leaves you with a need to return and sample another of their culinary creations . The originality of the menu makes one wonder , where have they been all this time. The staff is young and ambitious and from what I experienced very dedicated to both their profession as well as the establishment. Congratulations on a job well done .
