No one can even pretend anymore that the Italian Market is "just" an Italian market, not with the plethora of Asian eateries, the incredible Bitar's Middle Eastern and now Taqueria Veracruzana, which serves fast, cheap and tasty Mexican food. It's not much to look at -- nothing at all really -- but the food is hearty and satisfying and includes tricked-out Taco Bell tacos (including unusual varieties like beef tongue and pork), burritos, enchiladas and the like, all made with fresh tortillas and seasonings. There also are more enterprising entrees such as sauteed beef with cactus. But really, don't go expecting anything in the way of ambience and service can sometimes be less than enthusiastic. In warmer weather it can be a little stifling inside. But don't let any of those things sway you from trying this little gem.

Oh how I miss this place!

I lived a few blocks from this wonderful establishment. I like to think that I was amongst the first to discover it. I always found a way or a reason to go there. I'd drop off my laundry at the 10th St. Laundry and head over for a relaxing bite. If I could find a table that is. Most of the time, I'd sit outside and eat. I’d stop on the way home from work. Getting off the rt 47 on Eighth St. and waling the 1 ½ blocks up. At least I’d still have 6 blocks to walk off the filling meal. I took everyone I knew there. The chicken burrito and the rice/beans plate was my favorite. Wash it down with one of those imported Pepsis. I could spoon-feed myself the two sauces you'd get. I really miss it. I'm living in Georgia now and am still searching for a good place to get some south of the border flavor.

Awesome

As an Austin, TX native I pride myself on having had many good Mexican meals, but Taqueria Veracruzana is still a favorite. Don't let the idiot reviewer Margaret Battistelli's comparison to "Taco Bell" discourage you, these tacos bear absolutely no resemblence to anything TB has ever offfered. These are savory, soft concoctions that will leave you begging for more. There pork tamales served in the winter are great blizzard stock, too!
