Nowhere is Philadelphia's mania for cheesesteaks more evident than at the famous diagonal crossing of Passyunk at Ninth Street where Pat's and Geno's, two triangular buildings, face each other like daggers, serving cheesesteaks 24 hours a day. Go at 3AM, and while darkness surrounds the rest of South Philly, here lights burn brightly and people and cars jam the streets. With outdoor seating only and boardwalk-like lighting, the scene is reminiscent of the shore except that instead of seagulls everywhere, there are pigeons. Pat's Steaks are of the sliced but not chopped variety and should be eaten quickly while still piping hot, and perhaps after a few beers to be fully appreciated. The quality may not match Dalessandro's or Chink's, but the setting -- warring cheesesteak giants facing each other -- is so uniquely Philadelphian, it's worth numerous visits.

Genos & Pats are the most overated places to eat on the entire east coast!!
By SPOOQEY RUBEN on 04/11/2009
I've had all kinds of food up, down, & throughout the Atlantic states, up and down the east coast and I personally, as God as my witness, have never run into a more overated bunch of ******* restaurants... Don't get me wrong! Genos & Pats both make good steak sandwiches; I don't deny that at all! But, for all the screaming hype over those two bastards you would think that there would be an amount of truth to the hype that didn't ultimately add up to bullsh!t! I've been to dozens of restauarants throughout Philly that make steak sandwiches. I've had them with & without cheese, onions, pepperoni, mushrooms, etc., at more places than I care to recite here and BY FAR the very best place to get a steak sandwich is "One Pound Cheesesteaks" (2661 Kensington Ave), at the corner of Kensington & Lehigh. Not only do they make the best steak sandwiches in the entire city, but they make them in 5 minutes or less! (And since the best steak sandwiches in the country are made in Philly it is a safe bet that One Pound Cheesesteaks makes the best steaks sandwiches in the entire country!!) AND... One Pound Cheesesteaks makes their steaks with a full pound of sliced steak for one 12 inch steak! And you can get a steak there that is 12 inches to 24 inches, which means up to 2 pounds of steak!! AND... for a 24 inch steak sandwich it will cost you $9.00!!! How much steak does any other restuarant in the entire city use on the steaks that they make!? How much steak does Genos or Pats use on the steaks that they make?? I would say that they, Genos & Pats, consistently use anywhere from 1/2 pound to 3/5 of a pound of steak! If anyone says that Pats or Genos uses an amount of steak on their 12 inch steak sandwiches that is greater than that they they are LYING!!! Genos & Pats both have probably been around for the longest and they are inevitably the most popular, I don't deny that either! But they are overpriced, overcrowded, and overated!! Nifty Fifties makes a better steak sandwich that those 2 ******** for cryin' out loud! If you live in the northeast take my word for it and go to the Nifty Fifties on Grant Ave and find out for yourself and save a lot of gas while you are at it!!

Don't mess with Pat's

Simple. Perfect. Don't mess with Pat's cheesesteaks. You don't know Philly until you've had one "wit" at 3am.

Best Cheesesteak
By VIRGIN6point0 on 07/12/2008
What a lot of people seem to be missing when they are bashing Pat's glorious Philadelphia cheesesteaks is that you can't get a Philadelphia Cheesesteak in Jersey or in Ohio as one suggested. It's a Philadelphia Cheesesteak, Pat's invented it....it's great sliced steak & cheese whiz (yes that's right cheese whiz this isn't the Ritz) shlepped from a window in south philly. Last time I checked (at 3am this morning) the line was around the block and they don't have time to be polite to people who can't order properly and are inconveniencing everyone else in line. Long story short if you want the best Philadelphia Cheesesteak go to Pat's, if you want a steak hoagie served to you politely I suggest the Four Seasons. For me.....I'll take a wiz witout!
