While most towns have a token Irish pub, Rula Bula is the hands-down winner for authenticity and atmosphere in Tempe. The name comes from an ancient Gaelic phrase that means "uproar and commotion," an indicator of the friendly crowds that pack the place each weekend. With stained-glass booth dividers, oak furnishings crafted in Ireland, a brilliantly painted Celtic knot mural and bartenders imported directly from the Emerald Isle, this pub and full-service restaurant is the next best thing to Dublin. Even when the burly blond bouncer opens his mouth a delicate brogue spills forth as easily as a pint of Guinness. Rula Bula is located in the historical Andre building, and pays tribute to the pioneer saddlemaker with saddlery decor and historical collectibles. The menu is traditional Irish fare ranging from shepherd's pie and English banger sausages to the daily "boxty," a crepe-like pancake rolled with meats and vegetables. Top off your meal with a decadent bread pudding in Irish whiskey sauce or a slice of Bailey's chocolate swirl cheesecake. The bar offers wine, mixed drinks and a large selection of draught beers, but thick Guinness pints and Irish "carbombs" are more popular with the crowds here. Weekly specials include a daily Happy Hour and Ladies Night on Wednesdays. Live music is an important part of the pub tradition, and Rula Bula features live music nearly every day. Rock and folk are on the musical menu, along with classic Irish bands Blackwood and the Keltic Cowboys.
