No matter how many other items are on the menu, Uno Pizzerias are built around the deep-dish, crunchy original pizza filled with meats, cheeses and spices. The story? Texan Ike Sewell moved to Chicago and invented the Chicago pizza in 1943. He figured that if you combined Italy's old authentic recipes with impressive quantities of meats, cheeses, vegetables and spices, pizza would become a hearty meal. So he opened Pizzeria Uno as a fine restaurant specializing in his new deep-dish pizza. Chicagoans came in droves, and Ike quickly ran out of space. So he opened a second restaurant across the street and called it Pizzeria Due. The rest is legend. Pizzeria Uno and Due have changed the definition of pizza and become the most celebrated purveyors of the popular pies in the world. The crowds at Pizzeria Uno are a cross-section of the population. There's always an feeling of expectancy in the air, partly because the deep-dish pizza takes at least 45 minutes to bake. While they wait for the pizza, customers drink beer or mixed drinks, eat salads, sample appetizers and look at their watches. A word of caution: deep-dish pizzas are much larger than they look. Two pieces are ample for most people.

Lots of hope and hype

The grapevine will tell you that this place is the best, and the previous few reviews(which aren't that recent) might also back up the claim. However, having eaten at many pizzarias across the country, I can honestly say that this one is not one of the best. Great atmosphere, great location, beautiful area and building, and the service is fairly decent, but what do you really look for in a pizzaria? Exactly, the pizza. Chicago deep-dish is fantastic, but the pizza here is greasy and expensive, so if you have money to spare, and don't really want the best of the best of the best pizza in town, Uno's is the place for you.

Deep dish pizza

Nice atmosphere inside. The pizzeria is located in the charming downtown section of Tempe. This is a national chain based on the legendary pizzeria in downtown Chicago, unfortunately none of the chain pizzeria's I have tried are anywhere near as good as the original. The crust just isn't the same. That being said it's not a bad pie and if you haven't tried the orginal you will probably be pleased. If you have never had a deep dish pizza it is differnent than other pies, you eat it with a knife and fork. Two pieces should fill you up.
