Shunning labels, Modified isn't an art gallery, jazz club, coffeehouse or theater. Calling itself an "art space," Modified makes the most out of the tiny historic home it occupies. Art in all media from a couple of monthly artists hangs on brick-exposed walls, across from a bar selling economical Sobes and Mexican sodas, but no coffee or beer. A larger room rumbles from the underground up, teeming with an all-ages bohemian clique reaching beyond the grasp of the mainstream. The crowd creaks in over wood floors to witness indie rock, experimental music, emo, spoken word, techno-laced jazz, chamber music, theatrics, performance art and -- get this -- "complex math rock." The ceilings are Gessoed canvases, low-overhead hangings that keep the tight community from spreading too far or too thin. Since all employees are volunteers and some even board there, Modified is its own community.
