Unlike most local barbecue joints that oven-roast meat, A&J's cooks its meats in a smoker over mesquite wood chips, producing a richer, darker flavor. Diners can even watch the process through glass walls. If the smell alone doesn't win you over, the spicy, smoky flavor of the meat will. Lunch and dinner is served counter-style, with paper napkins and picnic-ware. Disposable plates are piled high with spare ribs, hot links or shredded chicken accompanied by helpings of cole slaw or skin-on fries. Be forewarned, the sauce packs some spice, so first-timers should opt for an extra-large beverage.

Much prefer Memphis style
This was my first try of Chicago style and I have to say it just doesn't come close to it's cousins further south. I didn't see any kind of spice rub on the meat before it was put into the smoker and the taste confirmed that. The sauce appeared to be a slightly spicy tomato sauce that was more like soup poured over the meat. Overall disappointing for someone who has grown up with West Kentucky and Memphis style BBQ.
I miss this place
I live in Tucson now and there is nothing here that compares to this restaurant.. I'm glad to see it on the list. The family has worked hard to make it the best and they deserve to win the title.
