In another attempt to promote "New American" cuisine, Bloom restaurant has built a menu around classic American dishes with French, Italian and Asian accents thrown in for flavor. Most entrees consist of basic favorites such as roasted chicken with caramelized onions and whipped potatoes, grilled fish or steak. Noteworthy is Bloom's offering of free-range chicken and organic greens, as well as a few tasty selections for vegetarians and health nuts. Appetizers, salads and sandwiches all feature plenty of fresh vegetables with yummy sauces or vinaigrettes. A very impressive wine list and martini menu help move this restaurant up a notch or two in the Scottsdale dining scene, and the ideal location (in the new shops at Gainey Village) should ensure its popularity. Get there early, because this shopping center is taking off and the parking lot is packed.

Disappointed...

What do they say...the bloom is off the rose. It definitely is. Bloom has dropped from one of my favorite restaurants to quite ordinary (table's common feeling). I used to get excited before every visit to Bloom. Now I don't mind if I don't go back. We were let down in almost every area... -The previously excellent lobster bisque is now watery and contains no lobster...prompting jokes of is this lobster broth and can I maybe get a piece of Perch in here at least? -The calamari in the calamari salad now comes in a different batter - instead of the light, lunch perfect delicate batter of the past, it was covered with an oily dense beer batter. Would have been great with a beer in a sports bar but didn't impress at Bloom. -The previously unbelievable prime rib sandwich with brie contained barely a trace of brie. What happened to the thick slab that made the sandwich. -That covered everything at the table so I couldn't say it was dish specific bad day. -We pre-ordered a birthday desert (full order of the excellent bars of sin) but the birthday girl got nothing until we reminded the waiter after he'd delivered our check. He then brought the customary birthday half order - lovely. -Of the ordered cappucinos & lattes, he also forgot one of the lattes until he was reminded and that also arrived after the check. -He was also 1 for 7 for order errors which isn't a big deal in itself but combined with everything else, it was just very disappointing. -Our service was attentive but not nearly as real in the past...prompting one of our table to joke when a server said "if you will please pardon me" that you could hear the "get out of my way" in the underlying tone. If Bloom has changed hands or chefs, it's definitely not for the better.
