The name doesn't sound quite as stuffy once you know that "Fermier Brasserie" translates to "Farmer's Tavern." The cheerily informal restaurant and wine bar encourages you to dress casually while dining on foie gras and sipping fine wine. The huge wine collection, presided over by owner Christopher Gross's wife, Paola, offers about 100 species by the glass. Before earning his wall's worth of prestigious foodie awards, Gross spent years in the renowned kitchens of Europe and the great dining rooms of American restaurants. Accordingly, the brasserie's food is eclectic -- mixed French-inspired classics and contemporary American. The menu ranges from burgers and pizzas served in the wine bar to Christopher's specialty items, which include house-smoked salmon and prime sirloin steak that's marinated, infused with truffles and then lightly smoked. Fish is always a specialty; look for the thick halibut steak, moistened in a truffle sabayon and paired with roasted red and yellow tomatoes. Many of the outstanding desserts have been featured in national food magazines. They include Christopher's signature chocolate mousse tower and chocolate cake with a warm chocolate lava center, served atop chocolate ice cream. The chef still pushes himself, serving dinner every night and lunch six days a week.

Excellent Food - good service
By lowreyden on 12/30/2007
Four of us tried 4 different starters, entrees and desserts. All the food was very good to excellent. The duck is highlight. Rabbit is a specialty on Saturday nights. Foie Gras is signature item in several dishes. The by glass wine list is fabulous. Great restaurant. The service was attentive without too much checking.

Good food - awful service
By foodguynaz on 02/15/2007
The restaurant asked for a credit card to hold a table last night. It seems like the restaurant is about stacking and packing people in. Not what one would expect from $150 per person restaurant. I might be tough after post-diner buyers-remorse and realization that the big picture experience last night was that I just spent $300 was a $75 "Black Angus" experience. $50 for wine pairings on a tasting menu for 3-oz pours... seriously. 20% gratuity was automatically tacked on to the bill for two people, which was not communicated in any way, shape or form! Server had no reason to perform and it showed... awful service. Slow beverage service to start as we waited about 10 minutes ready to order drinks. The amuse was uninspiring brought out on a platter as we and the other tables next to us were asked to pick the offering off the platter. Then course #3 brought out before course #2. There was an understandable long wait for the second course while the third course was put back in the kitchen to sit (we actually saw it happen!) and then brought back out 20 minutes later right after the second course. The mushroom side portion was cold and my chicken/potatoes were barely warm. And then while we were on the cheese course, trash bags were being pulled across the floor behind us, part of the staff was wrapping up the night behind us and the rest staff were already at the bar smoking, drinking and kicking back. In the end, it ended up being just over 2 hours and I was shocked to see 20% gratuity atomically added. Pathetic. One positive note... The first two courses and 1 of 2 desserts were excellent (scallop&pepper soup, foia gras, lobster pastry, white fish, chocolate tower) were excellent but the overall experience and service was awful.

Excellent Meal
By koalabear803 on 01/24/2007
We don't drink wine, so we can't say anything about the wine selection. We started off the meal with the steam mussels, and they were just delicious, the best we've ever had. The mussels were flavorful and the sauce is a white wine sauce. My husband had the chicken, and it was almost perfect. The flavor was great, but the chicken was just a bit dry. I had the duck, and it was perfect. I've never had rare duck before, and was hesitant to order it, however it was delicious. The sauce for the duck was made of port wine, but it had no strong wine smell or taste which was great. The sauce is sweet but subtle and goes so well with the rareness of duck breast. The service was also great.
