The oldest tavern in town, the Coach House has sat on the corner of Indian School and Goldwater since 1959, watching Scottsdale boom around it. Developers have tried to close the place for "progress," yet the country-tinged dive has persevered as a reminder of Phoenix's roots, roots that open up at 6am daily. Locals keep business steady, while migrating snowbirds return seasonally for a friendly cocktail or two. Christmas season finds the Coach House packed, as younger crowds gather to socialize under an astonishing display of Christmas lights and decorations that has got to be seen to be believed. Taking weeks to put up, the adornments appear at Thanksgiving and truly bring a yuletide feeling to the sun-drenched Valley. And when the Christmas lights come down in February, the regulars still come by, the bar still opens early, and Scottsdale still persists its callous boom while the Coach House remains. -- Michael Brennan
