In a revolving restaurant perched high atop the Downtown Phoenix Hyatt Regency, the Compass offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire Valley. Normally, you'd expect to pay a week's salary for such amenities, but the prices are far more moderate than most of the city's plush restaurants. It's romantic as an evening setting as Arizona sunsets often provide a backdrop of pink and purple. During dinner, Valley lights are set out below like a twinkling carpet. If you have a favorite view, it will soon appear in the large glass window near your table. The restaurant makes a complete revolution every hour. During lunch or brunch, check out Camelback Mountain and the Estrellas and Superstition mountains in the distance. The Compass is an ideal place to bring older kids for special occasions. And it's a great place to remember when you're attending downtown events. It's across the street from Phoenix Civic Plaza Convention Center, Symphony Hall, Herberger Theater, and within walking distance of Arizona Center, Phoenix History Museum, Heritage Square, Arizona Science Center, America West Arena and Bank One Ballpark. The menu features contemporary American food with both Southwestern and Pacific Rim accents. The emphasis is on fresh ingredients, combined with favorites like delicate crab cakes; filet mignon with asparagus and mashed potatoes; and roasted pork tenderloin with a jalapeno glaze and sweet corn salsa. Sunday brunches consistently rank among the Valley's best.

Very romantic evening 04/06/07
By cormmm on 04/09/2007
The evening was a surprise my husband had planned for us. We arrived at the Hyatt in downtown phoenix, still not sure where we wear going we entered the elevator with a whole bunch of travelers who are going to there room from a long day of being out in the heat. We arrived at the top of the Hyatt hotel at the restaurant, the Compass restaurant. My husband went up to the hostess who looked very busy in the first place, and asked her about our reservations. She replied in quick snood voice your are late and will have to wait. So I thought great another one of those restaurants, but to my surprise another women step out with two menus and said "If you would like you could wait in the lounge area?", and she showed us where it was. Stepping on to the floor of the restaurant I notice it was moving, and looking up I was also overwhelmed of the view. The evening just improved a little more. We sat and talked and stared out over the entire city of phoenix. The same lady who sat us at the lounge came and got us and sat us on the other side of the restaurant which was also a wonderful overwhelming view of the city of phoenix, Scottsdale, and mesa. We also where able to view south mountain and camelback mountain, the evening turned even better. Our waiter, Dan, was excellent, he was there to caterer to everything we needed and asked for. The fist course was a salad, but not just any salad it was a Strawberry fresita salad, it tates so good. I believe they grilled the salad a little bite. I had an Alaskan Halibut for the main course and it was cooked perfect everything tasted so fresh and wonderful. The Halibut was so soft it just melted in my mouth. We had two glasses of wine each, and surprisingly the bill was not as bad as I thought it would be. The point I am trying to make is the restaurant is a very romantic wonderful relaxing place to enjoy with your significant other. The service and food top all, literally. I give it 4 stars.

Great View, So-SO- food

Have been to the Compass Room several times. Fell in love with the evening rotating views at first, very romantic, but finally noticed that service was not that great and food was WAY overpriced for the amount you received. Felt rather taken advantage of . Ruths Chris is way better value, Great food and elegantly served, very romantic also.

great view made it fun though

If you're going to the Compass restaurant for the food, you might want to go somewhere else. We went there for the Sunday champagne brunch. The salad selection was fresh, but that's where the good food ended. The meat selections weren't great; the dumplings were dry and tasteless, though the chicken and sausage, etc, were fine. However, my family and I were VERY disappointed with the dessert; the chocolate fountain was not tasty, the cakes were a bit dry, and the cheesecake tasted instant and not real. However, the view was good, so the experience overall was fun. Nice to go to once.
