The antidote to chain restaurants, insincere service and stagnant dinner choices can be found in this tiny bistro opened in a former antique shop. Founded in the love of rural French dining, Coup Des Tartes is that cozy spot to bring your cherie for candlelight in her eyes and haute cuisine on the table. Uneven wood floors, mismatched chairs and hand-picked decorations lend to the ambiance in the quaint main dining room, with a second room available to host private parties of up to 40 people. Menu choices change with the wind: Every week or month brings new offerings to the handwritten menu. One constant is the house-specialty, spice-rubbed lamb shank, served with couscous and a harissa-spiced vegetable ragout studded with dried fruits. Drinks are strictly BYOB, allowing guests to bring their favorite vintage or something to match the famous dessert tartes. From the signature banana brule tarte to a variety of fruit and chocolate tartes, these stunning treats have put the restaurant on the map. A mere 38 seats means that reservations are an absolute necessity; calling about two weeks ahead during tourist season, and nightly thereafter, is recommended. -- Jill McCabe

For a place that claims to be french they were far from it. Their menu is american, italian and a pinch of french. No less they serve fish that they claim is hawaiian. The names of some meals are a turn off such as -- meat and potatoes .... Interesting cheeses...I'll pass on something called interesting -- sounds like your hiding something instead. The main courses are nothing to rave about -- they have your average filet mignon with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes that tasted like they came from a box. The pork tenderloin also could use some help in the flavor department. The sprinkle of parsley around the plate went out in the 90's. As far as tartes go --- they had a nice selection however I ordered the pumkin tarte which tasted like an average pumpkin pie from your local supermarket with way to much creme on top. No less the crust of the tarte was under cooked on the bottom and over cooked on the sides. The chocolate mousee tarte sounds nice until you eat it. The chocolate is semi decent however the orange they used for flavor kills the entire dessert. It's over powering the simple taste the chocolate brings. Also served with too much creme and both tartes are served with this horrible cookie. The waitress was average. Our waitress was a tad over run with tables - to the point that the hostess was clearing tables and helping serve. We never even got any bread and of course charged a high price to open our own bottle of wine that we had to pour ourselves. The room we sat in was too small for so many tables and the decor needed much help. The tables didn't have matching candels - which you would expect since the room was so small you'd notice something like that. The music playing was something along the lines of the woo tang clan and not FRENCH at all. The plates served to share a meal weren't even salad plates- they were tea sausers. The price was high and the food just average. I wouldn't waste my money or time at this place.

The best in town IF you understand European cuisine! Obviously not the case for some people who rated it poorly. Too bad! GO and ENJOY...

Friends told me this was a great place, but the experience was very disappointing. The food was all right (not justified by the prices!), although the entree menu is limited. The high corkage fee is a pretentious joke - especially since it's completely do-it-yourself. The restaurant was inadequately ventilated and cooled for summer in Phoenix. However, what was truly shocking was the service. Very lackluster welcome, no refills on tea or coffee without requests, and the bread was removed before one of our group had finished her entree (we had to flag down a staff to get some more). Then while we were enjoying coffee with dessert, we were told by the host that our table was booked by another party in 10 minutes. Disgusting. Don't waste your money here.
