In a West Side area filled with chain eateries, people drive for miles for the fresh, made-from-scratch Italian food at Cucina Tagliani. It's been a popular destination since the early 1990s, when orange groves still dominated the landscape. From the beginning, the main appeal has been big servings of good food at affordable prices. The atmosphere is appealing, too. It projects a comforting, Old World ambiance, with exposed brick, weathered doors and twining grape leaves. At lunch and dinner, the Tagliani combo platter -- artichoke dip, Romano chicken, shrimp Parmesan, calamari, mozzarella fritti, focaccia and toasted Italian bread -- is a light meal for two or an appetizer for four. You'll find a lot of choices with the create-your-own pasta bowls. Just pick a pasta, a sauce and as many additional items as you can handle, including eggplant, Gorgonzola, pine nuts, prosciutto, walnuts and sun-dried tomato. Excellent thin-crust pizzas also come in lots of varieties. The menu lists more than 20 entries in various combinations, plus meat, seafood and vegetarian categories.
