In a deteriorating neighborhood on the edge of Phoenix's Downtown Arts District, Fate is a chic island in a sea of urban decay. The crimson exterior of the refurbished old house contains a three-room cafe that's funky, charming, artsy and cool. It has a lot going for it. Offering late night dining -- until midnight during the week and 3AM on weekends -- Fate offers a tempting menu of well-crafted Asian fare that tops out at $10 or less for every item. You can also bring your own wine for a modest corkage fee. The biggest thing going for it is owner/chef Johnny Chu, who puts in 18-hour days to prepare lunches and dinners that compare favorably with anything in the Valley. With no budget for advertising, the Hong Kong-born Chu is gambling on a hard-core response from inner-city residents to his food, art and music. Commissioned pieces hang on the walls, while cutting-edge live music draws crowds on Friday nights. The menu is largely vegetarian, including a nice array of soups and salads. Saigon egg rolls, Thai spring rolls, delicate crab puffs and pork pot stickers are among the appetizers. Entrees, featuring fresh wok vegetables with an array of chicken breasts, beef and tofu. -- Cecil Tuck

Late Night!
By azjezika on 07/23/2006
My boyfriend and I were recommended to Fate a couple years ago when we noticed how hungry we were at 1 am. A bartender in PHX told us about this new place with great food and late hours. The first time we went, we fell in love- not with each other, with the food! (We worked out, too, but that's irrelevant)! The food at Fate is the best I've had in Phoenix- especially at the hours I've had it. Every dish is made to taste upon request and we've never been disappointed. Service is good- music is great- ambience superb. Too bad you can't choose your fellow diners because they tend to be the worst part of the experience! (And most other diners are pretty damn cool anyway). First date, late night, or needing food and good drink, Fate is the place.

GREAT fried Tofu!
By wolveria on 03/07/2006
They have the greatest fried Tofu EVER and it is well worth it to seek out this little red house. The interior is very modern and unique, and the food is nothing short of celestial. If you love oriental food, this is the place to be. P.F. Chang's? Pei Wei's? FAHGET ABOUT IT.

Amazing
By hzyuri on 02/02/2006
I have been going to this restaurant often since I learned about it just before i moved away. All the times I have gone, I have had great service and great food. The waitresses were knew alot about the food they served, and they even recommended dishes to us. They were also good about refilling the water, and being friendly throught the night. The food was also great, and I was able to relax and enjoy the food with my good friends. All in all, I recommend this place to anyone who is looking to for an aesthetic experience with that special someone.

Incredible
By nomeatformeeee on 05/24/2005
I have been going here for a year+.. the hot and sour soup is to die for, and the tofu is great. Perfect place to go if you have veggie and non-veggie attendants! Reasonably priced. Excellent atmosphere
