Considered one of the top authentic and adventurous Chinese restaurants in downtown Phoenix, the Gourmet House of Hong Kong is metro dining at its essence. From the outside, the Gourmet House looks anything but gourmet: Its walls are beat, battered and painted powder blue. But all renowned downtown eateries have character, something the Gourmet has in each crack and cranny. Navigating their menu may take up your entire lunch hour with more than 350 selections. Think fast and pick a noodle dish, moo goo gai pan, duck feet, famous sweet and sour soup or anything with a bean sauce. Set up your lunches on your table's center spinning wheel. This way each member of your party can get a taste. And if you're on a budget, there's no better non-McDonald's deal out there than the lunch special. It hasn't been hit by inflation, and the Gourmet House hasn't been hit much by time as it remains a Phoenix lunchtime fave. It's also a fave at dinnertime, when you'll have more time to peruse the menu, and prices are still among the cheapest in town. Many customers pick up a paper menu and call in a takeout order to carry home.

Gourmet House of Hong Kong
By Fsjaisaacs on 06/26/2008
Having lived overseas in the orient and loving Chinese food, I tried this restaurant (back in the days before it was enlarged and was very plain with the family often eating or chopping food at a table at the front entrance. The food is very authentic and delicious. Each time we go we try to test a new dish. One of the signs of a good Chinese restaurant is when you see lots of Chinese families eating there, and this one fills that bill. This is a very basic restaurant and not for a place for anyone preferring ritz..

I have been to every place in town and gourmet house of hong kong is still the the best. I have been eating here since I was three years old and have always had great service and never even once had a bad visit. AAA service.

TERRIBLE!!

This place is nasty and so is their food. We went there because it had won the Best of Phoenix award a few times. If this is the best I'd hate to see the worst! We all ordered egg rolls and they were incredibly greasy and bland. Then we ordered our entrees - orange peel chicken, lemon chicken, and orange beef. Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting! The meat on all 3 entrees was tough and tasted like they had just dipped it in a jar of wallpaper paste before frying the crap out of it. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Don't waste your time or money.

I grew up in New York, eating in Chinatown about five times a week. I ate all the authentic meals, and enjoyed things like chicken freshly killed right outside the restaurant. Gourmet House of Hong Kong is the greatest place I have found out in Phoenix. Sure, the ambience is anything but tasteful; in fact, it is rather disgusting. But in Chinese culture, the uglier the place is, the better the food is that they serve. And at Gourmet House of Hong Kong, I can assure you, the kitchen is clean, the food is incredible, and there is nothing more authentic in town. Plus, the prices could not be any better. I must admit I have never ordered anything American-ized at the restaurant, so I am unsure of the quality of the sweet and sour pork, for example. But I can guarantee that the traditional dishes are superb. Try "Gailan" with garlic sauce and chicken chow mein "Hong-Kong-style." You will not be disappointed.
