It takes a delicate touch for a modest, locally owned restaurant to compete with the big-budget corporate giants. Yet, the charming little Grazie in Oldtown Scottsdale is getting a lot of attention -- from pizza buffs and late-nighters to wine connoisseurs and the in-crowd. The renovated cottage with colorfully painted walls seats only 90 people, making it even more desirable to those with a fondness for exclusive locales. For wine aficionados, it's the big selection of reasonably priced Italian wines, available by the glass and bottle. Grazie is a major boon to the gourmet pizza scene, with bargain-priced, wood-fired beauties that compete with anything in Phoenix, including Pizzeria Bianco. Bubbly, thin-crust pizzas and calzones are the centerpieces to the short menu. Almost half the crowded seating is on the delightful patio. A word of warning: Portions are quite large. Two people can easily share one personal-size pizza and a salad or appetizer, making Grazie an even-bigger bargain.
