For a fresh and unexpected twist on south-of-the-border fare, check out this East Valley restaurant that breaks all Mexican chain standards. Log construction, amber lighting and a cozy backyard veranda with cobblestone pavers create a rustic hacienda feel at this popular Mexican spot. Upon entering, you'll find that everything from the food to decor is fresh, snappy and decidedly different. The clean but slightly-cramped interior boasts glass-topped linen tables and booths, festive Mexican knickknacks, fresh flowers and hand-stenciled stucco arches. A deep menu offers notable starters, ranging from nopales salad (grilled cactus pad with vinaigrette) to beef gorditas with guacamole and arbol salsa. Portions are massive -- one queso fundido appetizer is a cheesy feast that can easily feed a table of four. About a dozen different entrees are available on any given day. Specialties include grilled chicken breast with spinach in chipolte cream, shrimp and tortillas simmered in salsa verde, pork mole made with pumpkin seeds and braised lamb shank with ancho chile sauce. A full bar, creative kids' selections and divine desserts (chocolate tamales, cheesecake with prickly pear sauce) round out the menu.

If you want authentic Mexican food, forget the famously over-priced and too old for it's own good Los Olivos, and forget the trendy bland Garduno's. If you want authentic, go to Los Sombreros. Best Mexican food in The Valley. The atmosphere is casual and homey, and the desserts are homemade!

Food is overrated, but ok. But the service is the worse I remember ever having!
