The Aztec-inspired front windows from Zyphos remain, but Z Lounge has evolved into something new. Martinis are the main attraction now, with new co-owner Ova Shofa serving up "custom" concoctions from his own recipes. You'll have to try them yourself, but think about the sweet taste of white chocolate truffle for a starter. Another Z favorite is the quasi-mojito (muddled lime, sugar and mint leaves mixed with vodka, rum and sours). If you've got a special martini in mind, chances are Shofa will be able to mix it for you. Z Lounge is in a prime people-watching spot, so be sure to snag an outdoor table in nice weather. Happy hour, from 5 to 8PM, draws folks ranging in age from about 25 to 40, who enjoy winding down after a long day at work. The college crowd rolls in after 9PM to hear DJs (and bands some nights) and the updated sound system in Das Lounge, upstairs. ("Das" means "beautiful girl," so expect guys in the know to keep their eyes open.) Z kept the dividers in the first-floor bar, so there's a bit of private space for couples or groups, even when it's packed.
