Aging Gen X dance-club fans are always recalling, with a sigh, what life was like in the 1980s, before all the great punk parties and all-electronic bands disintegrated into grunge. But at the Upstage, the eighties attitude is alive and kicking with its generous dance floor -- nearly the size of a high-school auditorium -- and a room-length bar that boasts specials every evening. Thursday Eighties Night is among the most popular collegiate outings, when scores of voices sing out to tunes by Vanilla Ice and Huey Lewis and the News. Black trench coats resurface for the Upstage's Goth/Industrial nights, and the semi-regular costume party -- not to mention record parties, magazine releases and a retroactive chance to head-bang -- add spice to the usual DJ parade.
