Rate and Write a Review Yes, Vento's Pizza may have moved locations since it opened in 1949 -- the original parlor made way for a Home Depot -- but the pizza's still made according to the original family recipe, which has been handed down to the next generation of Ventos. Here, the homemade pizza is a medium-crust pie, with toppings that include beef, steak, chicken, bacon and olives. The sauce is the secret, Al Vento Jr. says. Hoagies have also been a part of Vento's menu since its inception, although the famous Italian Army chopped-beef hoagie (with fried onions, marinara sauce and provolone cheese) was named in honor of Steelers great Franco Harris and the fans who waved Italian flags for him at games. Other favorites include the Italian Western hoagie (grilled sausage, onions and green pepper wrapped in egg with lettuce, tomato and provolone) and the gyro (with lettuce, tomato, sauce, fried onion and provolone). There are breakfast sandwiches if you're on the go in East Liberty in the morning. And while takeout is readily available, we bet you'll enjoy that pizza or hoagie better on Vento's patio.
