When you're riding your hog through Pennsylvania, and your fuel gauge reads empty and your stomach agrees, cruise down Penn Avenue 'til you hit 31st Street. Then, keep your eyes peeled for a lonely-looking building with a big sign. Welcome to the 31st Street Pub. This spot may have let go its strippers, but its gritty trappings remain: Shelves lined with dripping candles and skulls, old vanity plates from forgotten Harleys, and a voluminous main room with a dark, barnlike hollowness are what you'll find. With its big stage and largely unfurnished floor space, the pub bills itself as one of the best rock 'n' roll venues in the city -- well over 100 people can sweat it out beneath the stage's footlights, even with the bulk of leather jackets. For bar-hoppers who don't ride 300cc motorcycles, the pub might seem intimidating at first, but don't let the bartenders' tattoos fool you: The staff is professional, and the music is worth revving up for.
