This little market is said to be a big stop for the big fish, one where nearly every Pittsburgh CEO has eaten. Still, even a guppy on the go can enjoy Benkovitz's quick, tasty seafood lunches. The menu offers fried-fish sandwiches, crab cutlets, tuna burgers and sushi, plus chowders (including Manhattan and New England clam, shrimp bisque and Cajun) and cold selections such as Maine lobster rolls. While dining, scope out the fresh fish to take home for dinner, or the gourmet cooking products, placed near the door. During summer, the chef prepares fish on an outdoor grill. Though takeout is a big deal here, you can enjoy your meal outdoors, at stand-up wood tables inside (a favorite spot for a lunchtime conversation) or in the original Three Rivers Stadium seats in the lobby. This fourth-generation family-owned business is no secret, but don't let the long line of customers scare you off. Benkovitz serves up a power lunch that won't short-circuit your wallet, and that's worth the wait.

Standing to eat fair food

We tried the Benkovitz fried fish sandwich and thought it was decent. Not greasy at least, and sufficiently stuffed with fish. Horseradish or plain tartar sauce in squirt bottles though not a snippet of lettuce on the sandwich. The fries are horrible -- frozen crinkle cut, so we ordered the fried zucchini strips. Greasy beyond belief but quite tasty when we blotted off the strips. The prices were exorbitant in their fresh fish department and quite honestly, the fish didn't have the fresh glistening quality I look for in NYC when I buy fish. I guess being born in Boston makes me a fussier customer than native Pittsburghians. In any event, I much preferred our experience at the Monterey Bay Fish restaurant high on Mt. Washington. To die for view and a lovely (sit down!) dining experience. Aloof is the best word for the staff, but the fish was well prepared and quite reasonable (at lunch time, anyway). Benkovitz? I'd pass it the next time and dine like a lady at the Monterey Bay Grotto.
