The original restaurant opened in 1993, in a Minneapolis basement (the name literally means "Joe's Basement"), and quickly became known for its overflowing platters of Italian standards and boisterous party atmosphere. Now, at the Pittsburgh location, small Caesar salads serve four, and heaping bowls of pasta are smothered in marinara and three-pound meatballs (yes, really). Giant pizzas, giant pasta platters, giant loaves of garlic bread and giant salads keep the crowds just as big. A 1950s-style Italian motif plays out in the dining room, which is filled to bursting with black-and-white photographs, Christmas lights, religious paraphernalia and reminders of the mother country. As you might expect, Buca di Beppo draws a wide range of patrons. After all, everyone can appreciate good-quality fare that doesn't skimp on the quantity.
