Rate and Write a Review South Side has changed since Cafe Allegro opened its doors here in 1986, but the restaurant has remained a landmark of simple elegance and taste. A few light touches -- such as poster reproductions of famous artworks lining the walls and elegant flower arrangements on the tables -- create an intimate, romantic atmosphere. The menu of Mediterranean-style dishes changes seasonally to ensure the freshest flavors. Among the most popular choices are grilled fish with Allegro's signature red-wine-and-peppercorn sauce; grilled calamari in citrus marinade; beer-marinated filet mignon with gorgonzola sauce; and stuffed salmon baked in parchment. Each dish is enhanced subtly with spices, herbs and other fresh seasonings. Bread, served hot from the oven, might leave you too stuffed for side dishes, but the vegetables, pasta, soup and salad are not to be missed. Still going? Allegro's homemade desserts are sure to finish you off.
