South Side has changed since Cafe Allegro opened its doors here in 1986, but the restaurant has remained a landmark of simple elegance and taste. A few light touches -- such as poster reproductions of famous artworks lining the walls and elegant flower arrangements on the tables -- create an intimate, romantic atmosphere. The menu of Mediterranean-style dishes changes seasonally to ensure the freshest flavors. Among the most popular choices are grilled fish with Allegro's signature red-wine-and-peppercorn sauce; grilled calamari in citrus marinade; beer-marinated filet mignon with gorgonzola sauce; and stuffed salmon baked in parchment. Each dish is enhanced subtly with spices, herbs and other fresh seasonings. Bread, served hot from the oven, might leave you too stuffed for side dishes, but the vegetables, pasta, soup and salad are not to be missed. Still going? Allegro's homemade desserts are sure to finish you off.

I've been going to Cafe Allegro for years on those special nights when you want to be assured that you will have great service and great food. I've recommended Cafe Allegro to many people.

ALWAYS FABULOUS
By localgourmet on 12/14/2004
If I had to choose a restaurant where I would eat on a nightly basis, this one is it.

I've been going since they first opened the door.

Wish there were more like Cafe Allegro in Pittsburgh.

Everything from the bread, patte, wine and appetizers of mussels and lobster bisque soup were excellent. Then came the entree. It left much to be desired considering the anticipation the previous selection brought. I had the fettuccine pasta and my boyfriend had the 20 oz porterhouse. The flavor was just OK and did not live up to our expectations. Excellent service and quaint, romantic atmosphere.

BAD
By marel07 on 02/20/2004
a recent dinner proved less than satisfactory. our seafood was a mouth full of bones with the first bite. the rest of the meal was gummy textured pasta and overall just bad. what's happened to this once excellent restaurant. better shape up, there's competition out there more than ever. your prices are higher than most and you should look at your quality.
