Rate and Write a Review For years, 1401 East Carson was an imposing stone bank, servicing South Side customers and helping them with their finances. But after gutting the interior, building a long bar and an elaborate lighting system, and installing TVs and comfortable booths, three brothers established the Carson City Saloon, a traditional sports bar with an upscale vibe. Energetic and fun, Carson City is an instant South Side staple. It boasts everything Pittsburghers love: a wide selection of brews on tap, regular game nights, baskets of barbecued wings and very cheap food. The managers also cater to newfangled fads: a variety of salads and elaborate cocktails (concoctions include the colorful "Buzz Bomb" and the voluminous "Call a Cab," which, true to its name, serves up to four people). The service is energized and eager to please, and large groups are welcome (although we'd recommend against more than eight to a party). And while Steelers fans may also become Carson City's favorite clientele, the Saloon promises live music -- a refreshing alternative to South Side's grittier, smokier venues.
