The line of hungry diners stretches outside on busy nights -- and not just because Chaya has only 30 seats. True, the dining space is limited, but careful attention to detail in the decor makes the room feel much larger, from the Japanese rock garden and waterfall tucked in the corner to the partitions that separate diners. These cozy quarters make Chaya seem all the more like a slice of Japan transported to Squirrel Hill. You can enjoy a light meal here for about $10, but make no mistake: This is high-end cuisine, with special sushi and sashimi dishes starting at $39. Out for an evening with someone special? The chef will whip up a meal for two at your table. If you want something even more exotic, take a look at the appetizer list. In between dishes such as fried chicken and soft-shell crab you'll find octopus, seaweed salad, squid and sea urchin. Take note: Those spices at your table aren't your usual salt and pepper. You might notice one green shaker has no English-language labeling whatsoever. That's sansho, which makes a great seasoning for grilled fish -- and is just another way Chaya offers good things in small packages.

Fresh, Authentic REAL
By milfriez on 10/12/2006
The reason this place does not score high on cities best, is because people dont want you to know its there. Its the best of the best ANYWHERE in pittsburgh when it comes to sushi. I happen to be a personal friend of Master Yasu, and the amount of dedication, and true to its roots sushi he creates is stunning. The taste is nothing like the frozen stuff, and he frequently travels back and forth to Japan to bid on pieces of the countries best ccatches that week to bring them here to the states. Its not there often, but if you get to try the fatty tuna, you will never want to eat anywhere else! So talented that he will even make anything you request whether on the extrmely extensive menu already offerered or not!

the real deal

I have lived in Japan before and can say that this is by far the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Pittsburgh. The chef takes pride in making sure to use the best and freshest ingredients as is evident in everything from the sushi to the pork cutlets, to even simplest of soups. Treat yourself to one of his kaiseki feasts, as we did for my wife's birthday, for an experience of the greatest of epicurean delights.
