When Davio was remodeled a few years back, it was enlarged to seat 55 guests instead of a mere 30. Still, customers clamor for seats at this South Side hot spot. Why? Foodies know this is the place for authentic Italian cuisine prepared by a first-rate chef. Once you snag a reservation, ride the cable car to Davio's front door, where staffers promptly usher you to carved-wood chairs and proffer warm bread and fagiolini (white bean) spread. Renowned for stuffing guests long before the main course arrives (as any good nana would), Davio treats each table to heaping house salads and sides of pasta with red sauce. For the main course, standouts include the double chop of grilled veal, lump crab cakes, pan-fried shrimp and scallops. (Davio has a BYOB policy, with a flat $8 cork fee, so consider your order in advance.) You might have to wait weeks for a Saturday seat at Davio, but you'll forget all about that with your first bite.

DIsappointing visit last time
By hpshowman on 06/28/2007
The charm and delicious food is still there but everything has become ala carte. Salads are no longer included. Part of the charm has always been feeling like you are in an Italian home where the food keeps coming long after the stomach is filled. But the "left overs" are heavenly. Bring back the old menu!

No Disappointments!
By ddm11325 on 06/09/2005
I noticed the comments and reviews for Davio were old, so I figured I'd stop by for a comment or two. First, I have no ties to the restaurant, other then I had my first dinning experience there with three other couples, on a business related dinner. Being born and raised in Metro NYC, and traveling for a living, I spend a good amount of time in restuarants. With that said, I must say Davio does rank up there with some of the better resturants I've been to. The food was excellent, and the portions were more than ample. No problems with the service, and that atmosphere was wonderful. To bad its a BYOB, but thats not that big of deal. As far as Italian goes, I would say they were a combination of Italian and Mediterraneian(sp). Unfortunately, most people dont realize Italian cooking is different from region to region. Sorry folks, but the Olive Garden and Bravo's is NOT italian. Comparing Davio to either of them is pure food ignorance. How do they get from a 4 to a 5 star...1) Drop the prices just a bit; 2) get a liquor license; 3) update the bathrooms; 4) less tables; 5) another private area table. I'll be back without a doubt. Keep up the good work!
