Thanks to its mouthwatering meatless (mostly vegan) meals, a mix of folks flock to this no-frills market/restaurant: urban hipsters, environmentally minded consumers and young families, to name a few. Located on the first floor of what appears to be just another warehouse among warehouses, the co-op serves fresh smoothies, teas and juices, along with crisp salad-bar offerings and hot dishes such as vegetable fried rice, spinach lasagna and Mediterranean-style tofu. If it's a smoothie you're after, be true to the 'Burgh and have a Mean Joe Greene, made from banana, pineapple, soymilk and spirulina. The co-op is not merely a place to grab prepared meals, however; it's also a place to stock up on groceries. To become a member, you pay a reasonable fee (which grants you membership for life) to enjoy discounted prices. Non-members, meanwhile, pay a small surcharge on top of the posted prices.
