Polish Hill is famous for two things: the beautiful dome of its massive Orthodox church, and Gooski's, the legendary little bar that stands just across the ancient sloped street. Long regarded as one of the best cheap watering holes in the city, Gooski's is an island in the rough; as Polish Hill is almost entirely residential, this is the only local venue for neighbors and friends to convene. The clientele includes mostly rugged truckers and former steelworkers. Still, scenesters drive from miles around, negotiating the dangerous Polish Hill inclines, to try their hands at Gooski's pool tables (the dark, smoky billiards room would please even Paul Newman) or to watch an emerging punk band rock the house on the bar's intimate stage. Though Gooski's accepts only cash, there's a handy ATM in the corridor, and the bartenders are both hospitable and wise-cracking. Even on slow nights, Gooski's is the perfect spot to relax, sidle up to a pint, and share stories and raucous laughter.

Losing it's teeth...
By goodsnackwitch on 12/01/2007
This used to be a great place with great atmosphere. Now it seems anyone remotely cool is being run out by the likes of bike messengers, communist college hippies and crusty poser punks with stinky dredlocks. Gooski's has simply lost it's edge. Even the jukebox seems to have wussed out, offering up selections by supergroups like Journey. What?! Don't get me started on the bands that perform there...awful. Can we get someone with some taste in there booking the shows? There is one thing about Gooski's that keeps a few of us coming back: Tim Quinlan. Not familiar? Get acquainted. He might very well be the best bartender Pittsburgh has ever had.

Born & Raised

I was born in 1960 and grew up in POLISH HILL. My mother worked in the kitchen when the bar was called JAKE's back in the late 60's. I seen many owners come and go like Jakes, Wigleys,Gals,Nu-lays ,But the bar has been the same ever since i can remember.I've been shooting pool in the back of the bar since i was 8 years old. If your lookin for a shot and beer kinda bar, GOOSKI's is the place. Good People, good food & good drink. When you get there, tell them BODEAN sent ya!
