Once a hangout for angry poets and chain-smoking bohemians, Hemingway's has transformed in recent years, veering from its titular reputation as a "cafe." Ever since the management installed large, hanging TVs -- which are perpetually tuned to sports channels -- and introduced dirt-cheap beer, this spot has become a touchstone for the University of Pittsburgh's fraternity crowd. Public readings, once a famous attraction in the backroom, have petered out, making way for enormous drunken birthday parties and post-midterms revelry. The antique wood finish remains, as does the English-style pub menu, which becomes half-priced at lunch from 11-11:45AM and at dinner from 9PM until midnight. Hemingway's is also known for celebrating aspiring bartenders -- some lucky students have found their liquor-fueled concoctions printed in the stand-up menu, another of Hemingway's traditions that remains intact.

Poetry Lives at Hemingways!
By jbauer103w on 04/11/2007
Hemingway's is still home to a vibrant summer poetry scene, hosted by Jim Cvetic, when readings from early May through late July feature many of Pittsburgh's leading poets. Featured readers include well- known university poets, and many community poets with substantial local and even national reputations. Lots of talent, camaraderie and fun! The poetry evening begin usually at 8 p.m, with three or more featured readers and often an open mic. Newcomers are welcome. (Make your way through the bar to the "Back Room.") Those interested in more venues for poetry should check out the Pittsburgh Poetry Calendar (google it up) designed and maintained by Lynn Wagner, for more on Pittsburgh's exciting poetry scene. There's something happening almost every night! And we do appreciate Hemingway's making this venue available! J.Bauer

Sucks
By jello1024 on 09/06/2005
The only reason to go to Hemingway's is if you're a Pitt student looking for an easy hook-up. Dollar beers are nice, if you can get to the bar. Food isn't too good, but who can argue with half-price, that's all it's worth. Stay away during the daylight hours, the daytime manager is extremely rude and unhappy.

Not for everyone

If you like a crowded atmosphere and having to wait 5-10 minutes to get a beer, then you might like hemmingway's....

the utimate college bar

this place is the college equivalent of cheers, where everyone knows your name. since I started going there regularly, ive been greeted by the bartenders, and asked if I want my usual (long island). it also has the best drink specials, including half-off mixed drinks, 2$ well drinks, and a dollar draft every day of the week, not to mention a killer 1/2 off late dinner menu
