What's Ibiza like? Depends on where you sit, since there are five distinct sections at this East Carson Street tapas spot. The front dining area, with windows facing the busy street, is a people-watcher's dream. Walking toward the back, you'll pass the bar, where the happy-hour crowd is happily ensconced. Next, you'll see the kitchen, with tables opposite it so foodies can watch the chef team in action. In the rear, there's a heated patio which, if you sit near one of the three heaters, can be warmer than the inside of the restaurant. Even in winter, the patio's the place to hang out with the gang. Upstairs, there's a wine room (with a cork floor!) for private parties of 25 or so. But wherever you sit, you'll be able to sample a variety of tapas, from the classic potato-and-onion omelette to the grilled quail in red wine sauce to stuffed hot banana peppers with veal. Ibiza also serves entrees such as rack of lamb with garlic and rosemary, or black paella (a traditional rice dish with squid ink). At Ibiza, the plates may sometimes be small, but the flavors are anything but.

Not good

I took my wife and my sister and her fiance' there, hoping for a fun place to have some drinks and enjoy some tapas. Having eaten at Tapas places in bigger cities (Dallas, Houston, L.A.), I was hoping for the usual -- small plates jam-packed with flavor paired with a stellar wine list. Talk about disappointment, wow! The food, dish after dish, was flavorless. No spices, no garlic, heck even salt and pepper would work. Kobe beef carpaccio was even lacking. The tilapia cerviche was described as flavorful and mixed with avacado -- but arrived with only a hint of citrus and no avacado on the plate. And avacados are now in season. Bruschetta was mediocre at best. The olives -- actually the best thing we ate -- had flavor. I'm sure that's because they came right out of a can. But several of them were spoiled. Unbelievable. And, then, the wine. One would think that a place that calls itself a "wine bar" would have some real winners on its menu. But, c'mon, "flights" of wine that are 2oz pours from bottles that I can pick-up at the store for $10-20. I'd gladly pay $50 for a tasting of some high-end wines . . . but the "high-end" wines at this place are nothing exceptional. The service was good, and the atmosphere definitely beats the crowded conditions at the neighboring Mallorca -- but service and atmosphere are always secondary to the food. And the food (and wine) were not worth our time. Two thumbs down!

This is about as authentic a Tapas restuarant as Taco Bell is Mexican
