In Naples, Italy, il pizzaiolo ("the pizza maker") makes pies the way they have been made since 1830, when the first pizzeria opened in Port'Alba. Here in Mount Lebanon, Il Pizzaiolo relies on the same ingredients found in Naples -- handmade mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes and virgin olive oil -- to create an authentic taste that has earned this spot a coveted Vera Pizza Napoletana Association seal of approval. You can see for yourself as the cook tosses and dresses the pizza before your eyes, then slides it into a wood-fired brick oven right in the dining room. Il Pizzaiolo is a full-service Italian restaurant serving up plenty of other good stuff, too: linguine al Vesuvio with zucchini, hot banana peppers, brick-oven-roasted chicken and marinara sauce; and spaghettini con vongole with fresh littleneck clams. The lunch menu includes panini such as the Garibaldi, made with prosciutto, mozzarella and roasted red pepper. The dining room, decorated in earth tones and wood, maintains a rustic, Old World feel.
