In the movies, the Mexican cantina is usually dark, moody and brawl-prone. A mustachioed, suspicious-looking character stands behind the bar, wiping a glass. The regulars look up when a newcomer wanders in. Mad Mex riffs on this dusty, Old West motif -- it's dark and smoky, setting aside the bright, candied colors of more upbeat Mexican restaurants. But here the resemblance ends: Mad Mex serves some of the most mouthwatering tacos, burritos and quesadillas in the region. The music tends toward the rock/pop/house variety, and the full-bodied margaritas come in a dozen flavors and styles. If you're accustomed to Taco Bell or the local gordita joint, Mad Mex makes a gritty-but-classy alternative. The chef loads up courses with pinto beans, dollops of sour cream and scoops of spicy rice -- all elegantly arranged on colorful plates. Mad Mex may be in Oakland, but it's as close as Pittsburgh gets to the Mexican border.

Who cares if it isn't authentic?
By SweetPea1813 on 07/25/2008
Most "foreign food" restaurants aren't in fact authentic? C'mon now..how many people love Pizza Hut or Vocelli's or even Mineo's? None of those pizza places are "authentic Italian pizza." Delicious, but not authentic. And authentic Chinese/Japanese? Not to be found at PF Chang's or Tai Pei. But regardless, it doesn't make these restaurants any less delicious. Mad Mex has a wide range of choices for even the pickiest eaters. Don't like Mexican? You can get wings or a salad. Bringing your kids along? They even have chicken nuggets and waffle fries. The ingredients are fresh and there are a million-and-one vegetarian options. So if you are looking for "authentic" food, travel to the native country. If not, enjoy the delicious food Pittsburgh's "foreign" restaurants have to offer.

McMexican

Having lived in Southern Texas for about 30 years, I have a good idea what Mexican food is all about. This isn't it. Refried beans shouldn't have the consistency of a can of Alpo. The chips shouldn't be thick and hard. If you want alot better, go to Patron's in Wexford.

Fun and Friendly

Sanitation is important, and these restaurants have very high standards. Though Pittsburgh is graced with several, this is not a "chain" restaurant. In terms of service, well, all servers are not created equal. I find the atmosphere to be interesting, with the decor and artwork. The place to take out-of-towners who swear Pittsburgh has nothing to offer. If by authentic you are looking for your mouth to be set on fire, that is NOT real Mexican. Furthermore, when in a party of six or so, it is rare to find six people who like the same cuisine. In that case, it is good that they offer some more mainstream choices. Smoky? They went non-smoking on May 1st, so that's the fajitas giving off smoke.
