Not many restaurants in the 'Burgh can say they've outlasted the city's first bridge, the Prohibition Era and a huge lawsuit filed by popular chain restaurant Max and Erma's. But Max's is still here -- it just had to drop the "Erma's" from its old name. Serving up a tantalizing array of traditional German fare, Max's offers sausages, shnitzels and a unique variety of Old World favorites, including "hasenpfeffer" (braised rabbit in a spiced red sauce). But food isn't all that Max's has to offer. The place is stunning, with much of the original woodwork still intact. The solid oak icebox at the bar has been keeping beers cold for over a century. A cast-iron stove and beautiful, stained-glass lighting fixtures remind us of Max's rich legacy -- a throwback to its humble beginnings as a hotel in Pittsburgh's original "Dutchtown."

You will know you ate
By mecbe2 on 03/18/2007
Try a Rueban served between two Pancakes. Sweet and saur Cabbage..dumplins..soups..Don't even let me start on the desserts..Struddles the size of a hoagie. Did I mention a sweet little hostess that works after school and week-ends and the great family that runs this best kept secret in the burg.. lets just say "You will know you ate" after an experience at Max's. The only negative is it's in a neighborhood so you may have to circle or search for a parking place..but it is worth it.

GREAT German cooking
By srsouiriyoupc on 03/17/2007
It's hard to find a better German meal in the Pittsburgh area. (Penn brewery is very close, and close by...) The menu is full and varied, but what I liked the best is the ability to enjoy more than one selection by means of the sampler -- both for beer and for the entries. Now if they would only do that for the deserts... BTW: I find it a shame that this listing shows only three starts although all the reviews but one praise it. too bad one person who thought it was improperly listed has skewed the data so much....

a fun place
By virgerbs on 01/05/2007
I was pleasantly surprised to find such a good restaurant in a quiet neighborhood. Just a few blocks from the stadiums. From the outside it's very unassuming but once inside it is a delight. Great food, wonderful atmosphere. I recommend a tour around the inside to savour the old world decor. Worth the trip.
