When Joe Collincini and Becky Gomes decided to renovate the antique four-story building on the corner of 17th Street -- which has stood since 1893 and last housed a stationary store -- the pair knew they were cooking up something big. The result is Nakama, a super-trendy, cafeteria-sized Japanese restaurant offering sushi, noodle bowls, a beautiful island bar and enough seats for over 200 customers to sit comfortably. Spacious and atmospherically lit, Nakama is truly a labor of love, boasting a massive eat-in and take-out menu. Sushi fans will delight in Nakama's avocado and California rolls, soft shell crab, red snapper and an ocean's worth of other tantalizing seafood. Also boasting the only smokeless hibachi in town, Nakama serves up entrees ranging from traditional filet mignon to hibachi scallops, strip steak and sesame chicken. Platters are served on carefully glazed ceramic plates and bowls, with earth-toned cloth napkins for dabbing away stray rice. The bar is open until late-night, giving upscale hipsters the chance to try the latest Asian drinks -- from Asahi and Kirin Ichiban beers to plum wines and traditional warm sake. Say 'Hai!' to Nakama. -- Robert Isenberg

GO ELSEWHERE!
By Roxyduq on 08/04/2008
The few times I've been here, the staff has been VERY rude! It's so crowded too, you have to wait forever and you can barely move in their waiting area. Yokoso at the Waterfront of Ichibans are a little more reasonably priced, a LOT less crowded, and much friendlier!

You're kidding

Sure Nakama is trendy and in a good location. But that is why it's successful. Go down Carson a little further or visit the original Mt. Lebanon location of Little Tokyo. The food sushi and rolls are extrmely fresh and prepared with fine ingredients. I've been to Nakama a few times and it doesn't even compare to Little Tokyo. I have also traveled extensively to the west coast and Pacific Rim. Little Tokyo is by far the best sushi restaurant I've eaten at.

have u even the phrase, "if everyone would jump off a bridge, would you?" Well guess wat, since everyone is eating here, doesnt mean you should too!!!! I have been there only twice, once i left just right after i walked through the door. During the day, yes it is just a nice place to grab a quick, expensive, over-rated, boring sushi lunch. But at night, you can enjoy an over-crowed, smokey, loud, long waiting, expensive, over-rated, boring sushi lunch for three times the price because it is after six. Now, yes i have never tried any other of the food besides the sushi but since they are just being nominated for their sushi i think i can very one sided! There are a ton of other smaller sushi places where you and friends can go to get great sushi for half the price of the other guys and ur service will be much better!
