The Scoop: The aromas that draw you in are an apt prelude to what you'll find inside: Drool over the three huge glass display cases while deciding between chocolate chip cookies, strudels, cannoli and rich mousse cups. Though best known for their decadent French buttercream cakes, Paddy Cake offers tempting daily specials, delighting pastry lovers with everything from breads to pies (the fruit strips -- pastry topped with strips of fruit filling -- are simply mouthwatering). With the bakery's broad selection of individual sweets priced around or under $2, you won't have to spend a lot to satisfy that finicky sweet tooth. The Scene: Located less than a block from West Penn Hospital, Paddy Cake sells sugary confections to locals, hospital workers and friends and family who buy baked goods to sneak to hospital patients. Though the store is always busy, the staff knows how to move customers in and out efficiently, leaving just enough time to restock the cases for the next batch of hungry visitors. Insider Tips: Early-morning customers should ask for a bag of ''dunkers'' -- yesterday's leftover cookies that are sacked up and sold for 99 cents a dozen. -- Scott Amann

RUINED WEDDING CAKE
By nhgirl626 on 01/14/2006
I ordered a cake for 120, 90 showed and we still didn't have enough cake. When we went to cut our cake, we got through icing then couldn't get the knife further. It was stuck on a piece of plastic that was on the whole top of each tier under the icing. When the hotel went to cut the cake, same problem. They had to lift a plastic support sheet off of the cake, which pulled off all of the icing and pulled apart most of the cake. The bakery claimed this is industry standard, but both the hotel and 2 other bakeries said that the support usually goes just under the tier, not over the top of it. Paddy-cake blamed the hotel stating that they pulled it off too fast. But, even if they pulled it off slow like they claim, it still would have pulled off all of the icing. I told the hotel that Paddy-cake blamed them and they called Paddy-cake themselves. Paddy-cake denied ever saying it. Paddy-cake refused to give me any sort of refund "since you were able to use some of the cake". We should have had 30 extra pieces and instead some of the guests (including the bride) didn't get any! Those who had some said that it tasted good, but what does that matter when not all the guests get some. Furthermore, the driver didn't leave a box for the top layer. I was told "he must have forgotten". The hotel had to empty fudge out of a box that it came in and put my top layer in that. What a disaster. I'll never go there again and I recommend that no one else let them ruin their cake either!

Whats with all the almond extract? They put almond flavor in everything.
