If you are craving old-fashioned stout and food, look no further than the Pennsylvania Brewing Company. Consisting of a traditional German brewery and a beer hall restaurant, the Penn Brewery offers a festive and ethnic dining experience. Flags from various European countries and German regions hang from the ceiling, and historical photographs and beer memorabilia pepper the walls. Seated at long wooden tables and benches, guests can enjoy a view of the brewery through a large glass window in the dining room while they drink the homemade beers and dine on house specialties. On many nights, a strolling according player belts out German songs, and on the weekends, German bands sporting lederhosen play traditional tunes. Begin your tour of German cuisine with the brotzeitteller (a sampler plate of German meats and cheeses), and then move on to the Schweinebraten (slow oven-roasted pork loin) or the weinerschnitzel (breaded veal cutlet). All entrees come with side dishes like sauerkraut and German potato salad. If you're at Penn Brewery for lunch, be sure to have a bratwurst-and-knackwurst sandwich. No meal is complete without a taste (or a pint) of Penn Pilsner, the flagship brew; other beers are available in bottles for takeout. -- Stacey Kaplan

Beer great, food excellent, service lousy. It always seems like there is never enough staff on duty.
