The SceneThe restaurant is reached via elevator, accentuating an already striking view from Mount Washington. (This used to be the site of Christopher's.) An elevated bar and large pillars, painted as palms, dominate the room. The FoodWhile there are a number of standards, check out the "fish board" for specials. Often they consist of fish flown in that day from Hawaii. The ahi, coated with black sesame seeds and char-grilled, is a favorite for tuna lovers who prefer sashimi. Another big seller is the grilled sea bass with macadamia nuts. If it's available, try the opaka-paka or onaga. Dinners come with clam chowder or salad, plus a vegetable or some form of starch. The turtle pie, carrot cake and white chocolate macadamia nut mousse hit the sweet tooth just right. Or go sweet and sour with the unusual and delicious lemon rhapsody.

View to die
By marges405 on 10/21/2006
Just ate a very nice lunch here. The views are spectacular and the restaurant is lovely. The staff is ... well ... aloof but knowledgeable. The fish was well prepared (though my husband's medium rare tuna arrived closer to totally rare). It was sent back to the kitchen and returned medium and was very tasty. My sea bass on macadamia nuts was a bit too buttered, but was delicious. The wine list should be expanded to include some more modestly priced wines. All in all -- a very nice restaurant. I'd return the next time we were in Pittsburgh for another nice meal.

Wonderful

My husband and I went there for our anniversary, and it was a wonderful experience. The view was spectacular overlooking Pittsburgh at sunset, the waiter was first rate, and the food was deliciously prepared to perfection. Once you order, your meal is served promptly, yet they never make you feel rushed. We will definitely go there again in the future.

Good but not spectacular
By nixonshacc on 05/27/2005
Monterey Bay Fish Grotto on Mount Washington has a beautiful view, good service, and good food. This restaurant is very highly rated by others. I had lunch here. The things I noted were: The restaurant is not labeled well. You walk into the doors at the bottom of the building and are faced with the elevator, but there are no signs indicating which floor to press for the restaurant or that it is even the right entrance for the restaurant. The hostess did not greet us and we were ready to seat ourselves. The waiter was good and pleasant. The food. The most important thing that would make me forget about everything else if the food was spectacular. It was decent. We had the ichiban appetizer, which was good but not full of flavor even with the sauces offered. For the main course, we had tuna with black peppercorn and green onion sauce, and mahi mahi sautéed on a bed of crushed macadamia nuts. They were good and cooked correctly but did not have much flavor. The desserts were very good - a chocolate soufflé and cheesecake, both of which were rich and delicious. I would recommend at least trying the food and perhaps try something different than the food mentioned above. But I would disagree with the point of view that it is the best restaurant in Pittsburgh.
