Berbati's Pan Cafe   

A great line-up of live entertainment and tasty Mediterranean food keeps Berbati's Pan hopping. Situated in the middle of Old Town, this sprawling joint takes up half the block. Large columns, artwork and a 150-year-old bar shipped from Europe give the place an authentic feel, and the stellar jukebox in the pool room provides a much needed break from the American Top 40. Since the mid-1980s, Berbati's (named after the owner's home, a small village in Greece) has been a Portland hotspot around mealtime, but it took another decade to fully realize the nightclub and live music venue, which are fast becoming just as popular as the restaurant. A wide variety of regional and national names in pop, rock and blues is featured at Berbati's, and an excellent sound system keeps the music from getting lost on the way to your ears. -- Jason Smith
