Much like Alice in her travels through Wonderland, an interesting thing happens to many folks on their way over the river into downtown Portland: they never seem to get there. Maybe they stop by the Rabbit Hole Restaurant for an early dinner and poke their heads into the connected basement bar, the Mad Hatter Lounge for just a second. The next thing they know, a spot opens up on one of the couches and they're catching a set from one of the nightly live music acts. They find it hard to leave when they discover that a second happy hour kicks in at 9:30pm and extends straight into last call. The Mad Hatter features quality musicians like Peter Krebs, Bill Kennedy and other guitar players and songwriters with folk leanings. Thursday features a typical mixed-bag open mic night, so be prepared. The bar serves drinks with clever names right out of a Lewis Carroll novel. -- Joe Kurmaskie
