Rate and Write a Review Portland's jazz scene has a long history and loyal patrons, but it is often overlooked by music writers and the younger set, with almost all the hype going to ''alternate rock.'' The Blue Monk has a hip, youthful feeling, and clearly has a mission to remedy this situation. In the uber-trendy block of Belmont between 34th and 35th Avenues, this club books serious jazz acts five nights a week, as well as Sunday jazz brunches. The airy upstairs room is modern-spare, with flickering cobalt lanterns to lend the necessary blue note. A full menu of affordable East Coast-style Italian favorites, like spaghetti and meatballs and linguine with clams, is served late. A very impressive list of German and Belgian style beers, both imported and domestic, distinguish the bar. Just like the old days, the music is down in the shadowy basement. Portraits of jazz greats by a variety of local artists add another knowing touch.
