Pioneer Place is well in keeping with Portland's laid-back but cosmopolitan downtown style. This is no humdrum box of shops slap together without thought. Located across the street from Pioneer Courthouse Square, the mall showcases the upscale Saks Fifth Ave as one its top anchor store, but class and elegance don't end there. This mall is something of an architectural work of art, with plenty of glass and etched rose decorative inlays. It's built on two separate city blocks with an underground level that allows shoppers to avoid the rain and winter chill while fueling the gross national product. Three levels of stores spiral up in Dr. Seuss-like fashion. Escalators are everywhere and offshoot alleys to still more retail outlets leave some shoppers off- kilter until they learn their way around. Due in part to its downtown location, the clientele is a true cross- section of the public. Seasonal special events include live music, art displays and kids activities. A Premier Shopper Club enrollment includes free seasonal gift wrap and stroller check-out. And for some reason, people forget that this is a Ticketmaster outlet, so the lines for good concert tickets are usually pretty light. Your biggest problem when shopping here is finding decent street parking. Fortunately, it's right along a Max rail line, and part of the Tri-met fareless square downtown bus system.
