Portland's dismal winters are reason enough to stop at this haven of southern comfort and warmth. The food is an even better draw. You must arrive empty in order to savor all the fabulous wonders of the Delta. Enjoy gargantuan portions of fried chicken, blackened catfish, Southern ribs and red beans and rice with andouille sausage. Just don't forget the cornbread, mashed turnips and carrots, black-eyed peas or collard greens. Wash it all down with a Lynchburg Lemonade laced with Jack Daniels.
