Mosaic tile, stone and concrete give this bright spot the feel of a traditional Mexican kitchen. Grab a chair at the counter and you can oversee all the action -- just don't expect Mexican the way you're probably accustomed to. The simple menu divides along three sections: antojitos y ensaladas (small plates and salads), caldos y platos (soups and entrees), and otras cositas (sides). Dessert, which isn't on the one page menu, is also available. Appetizers include pork tacos, lime-marinated red snapper ceviche and grilled tamarind prawns. Entrees include some exceptional offerings in good portions with sides including red snapper cooked in banana leaves; squash, potato and Gruyere filled tamales; black bean, avocado and chile stuffed gorditas and grilled Painted Hills tip steak. Sides include roasted potatoes, refried beans and Mexican rice, handmade tortillas and whole beans. The orange flan, cinnamon ice cream and lemon empanadas are highpoints of the dessert menu. Spanish reds by the glass are the wine bargains at this promising upscale caf.
